Fazil On Yu

Black Skinned, White Masked

The first work in choreographer Fazil On Yu's new performance trilogy explores narratives of struggles and resilience within the experiences of Black people and People of Color in Switzerland and across Europe. It reflects on questions of belonging, loss, history, and identity. Drawing on the artist’s own ethnographic and sociological life experiences – as a Black man with an African immigrant background – he confronts the feeling of being trapped in a society that has sterotypically defined him, prescribing who he should be and what he should do. The piece is deeply inspired by Frantz Fanon's seminal book Black Skin, White Masks. The project also features multidisciplinary media artist Luka Schroth (Germany) and Ugandan musician and composer Ssemaganda Ronald.
