Tanzhaus stands for contemporary dance that has an impact — on stage and far beyond. Together with our Accomplices, we disrupt what’s immovable and invite people to be more present and more connected.

Yes, that sounds big. But dance is allowed to.

Four things that drive us

Openness

We meet others with an open heart and an alert mind. We act with goodwill and empathy, without letting that hold us back from making decisions.

Long-term thinking

We understand the world as one whole, acting with the awareness that today is shaped by yesterday, and that our actions determine tomorrow. In this spirit, we build long-term relationships and support ideas that have a positive impact on society.

Accessibility

We strive for radical accessibility and see diversity as a strength, because we believe in the voice of the many. Curiosity and courage enable us to try new paths and learn from mistakes – knowing that change is constant.

Body knowledge

Physical practices and methods shape our everyday work. We use and share this knowledge to support the wellbeing of the institution and to enrich society with it.

Sustainability

Sustainability is not a campaign for us. Not a label. Not a page in the annual report that gets skipped. We don’t just want to do less harm. We want to actively contribute something. That’s why the Tanzhaus team founded a working group that develops and implements concrete measures.

What We Actually Do

At the venue

• An internal working group (AG Green) continuously develops sustainable practices.
• Sustainability is part of our strategy paper and everyday routine.

For productions

• Clear guidelines for all productions
• Set design and costumes: reuse whenever possible instead of buying new
• Preference for regional suppliers and second-hand items
• Train instead of flights, wherever possible
• Catering: 100% vegan, regional, and seasonal

For our audience

• We support art that engages with sustainability.
• We make our practices visible and share them with others.
• Please come by bike, on foot, or by public transport!

Climate Balance

In 2025, the act Cleantech Agentur Schweiz produced a climate balance assessment for the Tanzhaus.

MovingTowardsZero was the Tanzhaus Zürich’s discourse series marking its 30th anniversary. From September 2025 to June 2026, renowned experts from art, science, and activism met on a monthly basis. Together, they developed new perspectives on social and ecological questions for the future. From June 26 to 28, 2026, the series culminated in an anniversary festival of the same name.
