Combining the practices of visual dramaturgy, performance-making, and curatorial work in choreography, Joanna explores and applies light and spatial design as powerful dramaturgical tools. Drawing on dramaturgy and visual semiotics, she joins artistic processes from the initial conceptual phase, shaping spaces of visibility, spatial composition, and the visual identity of projects. From 2004 to 2020, she ran a choreographic development center in Poznań, Poland. Since 2022, she has been working as a freelancer with various European dance institutions and educational programs.

Introduction to Visual Dramaturgy
Joanna Lesnierowska
This 3-day intensive Visual Dramaturgy workshop begins from the conviction that light design—like dramaturgy itself—should never be treated as a mere add-on, but as an essential part of any creation. Light determines both what we see and how we see it, and seeing shapes understanding. The first step toward Visual Dramaturgy is to question—and practice—our ability to look: expanding it beyond the obvious while cultivating awareness of our own perception(s), with the assumption that this will resonate similarly with our audiences. With insights into visual semiotics and the basics of light apparatus, participants will engage in shared exercises that train the eye and make new ways of seeing possible!
