ZÜRICH TANZT: When You Move Like That

When You Move Like That tells the story of a young woman in eastern Switzerland who wants to dance. Her mother comes from Africa, her father is European. As a five-year-old, she performs in department store playback shows, and as a teenager, she takes part in hip-hop dance battles. Training in classical and contemporary stage dance follows. But her entry into the professional dance world is not easy. When You Move Like That uses theatre and dance to tell the story of a young woman who learns to assert herself in the face of opposition.

Different worlds collide in the play: growing up between two cultures in provincial Switzerland. The different realities of life for young people growing up in the same country. Different dance worlds, which always also mean social reality. The protagonist fights for recognition and her desire to combine dance and existence. She appeals to the potential of all human beings to realise themselves, to the possibilities of participation, to help shape society and the world.

The actress and dancer Ilona Kannewurf draws inspiration from her own biography for her powerful, impressive performance.
