Meret Schlegel, Nick Brooke

Hypnagogia

Hypnagogia is a collaboration between choreographer Meret Schlegel and sound artist Nick Brooke. The term “hypnagogia” refers to a transitional state between sleep and wakefulness, in which the body is jolted back into consciousness by sudden bursts of energy in a limb. This collaboration explores the tension between frantic activity and placid stasis. During the performance, electronic devices create involuntary movements in the collaborators’ bodies. These impulses arise unpredictably generated by sounds and movements, playing with the borderline between intention and the unexpected, between sleep and wakefulness.

Meret Schlegel

Meret Schlegel looks back on a long and successful dance career, both on and off stage. After training as a dancer in Switzerland and the USA, she began working as a dancer and performer in Europe and the USA, frequently collaborating with artists from other disciplines. In addition, she was actively involved in numerous cultural institutions in Zurich, including serving as director of Tanzhaus Zürich. She later resumed her career as a dancer and performer and has since been creating her own works. In 2013, Meret received the Dance Award of the City of Zurich. That same year, she founded the company zeitSprung together with Kilian Haselbeck. In 2015, they received a Swiss Dance Award for their duet Orthopädie or to be. Since then, they have been touring with various pieces and interactive street performances, continuously creating new works—both together and independently.

Nick Brooke

Nick Brooke combines sound with theater, dance, and installation, creating unique devices and performances. In his theater works, vocalists and actors are trained to mimic sampled collages of sound effects, pop songs, and musical ephemera, blurring the line between recording and live performance. Brooke’s works have been featured across the U.S. and Europe — including at MASS MoCA, the Baryshnikov Arts Center, and the Spoleto Festival — and performed by ensembles such as the Bang-on-a-Can All-Stars and Talujon. He has received Guggenheim and Rockefeller awards and multiple residencies including in Bogliasco and Bellagio. He has a Ph.D. from Princeton University and is a professor at Bennington College.
