Shuyue Miao Zhao
Clarinetist, improviser, and curator Shuyue Miao Zhao was born in China in 1990 and currently resides in Zurich. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music at the Juilliard School in New York with a full scholarship. In 2015, she moved to Switzerland to pursue her studies in bass clarinet with a focus on contemporary music. In addition to her focus on interpreting compositions, Miao developed a keen interest in free improvisation and its philosophy during her musical career in New York City and Switzerland. During her recent master’s studies (HKB-CAP/Soundart), she expanded her musical setup, merging live electronics with amplified instrumental sounds. Since then, she has experimented with various electronic instruments (No-Input mixer, sampler, effects, feedback) in addition to her bass clarinet and instrumental performances. She has been invited to collaborate and perform with various groups of local musicians in Zurich, including Workoutjazz, Ensemble Wirren, Czarnagora, Gamut Kollektiv, and Schauspielhaus Zurich.
